America the Beautiful

I LOVE our country.

Words fail me when I try to put order to my thoughts of freedom, of patriotism, of what it all means.  Tears cloud my eyes when I cannot adequately express the gratitude I feel for our Founding Fathers.  Time has worn away the legibility in parts of the sacred document that is our Constitution, but it still lives!

Please take time today to read about, or watch a movie about, that which was so hard fought that we might exist as we do today.  “The Patriot”, though a mite bloody, is my favorite.  I recently learned that cruel Col. Tartelton and his Dragoons were real, though the story of the Marten Family was not.  Still, to see merchant, farmhand, slave, and children fighting the robotic British troops until their very end brought to my mind the sacrifice of our Savior.  Both gave their lives that we might be free.

I leave you with the words to my favorite patriotic hymn, “America the Beautiful”

“Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed his grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

“Oh beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare of freedom beat Across the wilderness!

America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self control, Thy liberty in law.

“Oh beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine,

Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine!

“Oh beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years,

Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!

America! America! God shed his grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!”
